A New Standard of Care
Dr. Avram Whiteman, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at McGill University and holder of a Master’s degree in Public Health, has long been passionate about disease prevention. “As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he says. That philosophy led him to collaborate with Dr. Robert Solomon, a board-certified dermatologist and lecturer at the University of Toronto, to explore the potential of advanced computer-assisted technology designed to detect skin changes earlier and more accurately. They discovered FotoFinder®, a sophisticated digital mole mapping system that captures high-resolution, polarized photographs of the entire body. The technology identifies and records individual skin lesions and stores digital dermoscopic images for future comparison. Unlike a standard skin examination, mole mapping allows dermatologists to log, chart, and document moles across the entire skin surface and track changes over time. This technology is particularly useful for identifying new lesions, including those that may be suspicious for melanoma. The specialized software stores and compares high-resolution images from previous visits, allowing clinicians to detect subtle changes in size, colour, structure, or pattern that might otherwise go unnoticed during routine visual examinations. By documenting the skin at baseline and comparing images at follow-up visits, mole mapping significantly improves the ability to detect melanoma at an earlier stage, when treatment is most effective.

Patient Journey
